Panthers move to Packerland

Posted

OCONTO FALLS – There will be different names on the schedule this fall, but Oconto Falls isn’t treating its move to the Packerland Conference as a reason to change its expectations.

The Panthers are coming off an 8-2 season in Mark Jonas’ first year as head coach, including a perfect 7-0 run through the Northwoods and a conference championship. Their season ended with a 27-12 loss to Wrightstown in the opening round of the WIAA Division 4 playoffs.

Now Oconto Falls moves into the Packerland for football, joining Bonduel, Kewaunee, Marinette, Oconto, Peshtigo, Southern Door and Sturgeon Bay.

“We are a conference champion, and we’re going to try to behave that way,” said Jonas. “I know that it wasn’t the Packerland Conference, but a conference champion is a conference champion. We have to carry ourselves that way.”

The Panthers leave behind Northwoods opponents such as Coleman, Clintonville and Crivitz, but Jonas sees plenty of challenges in their new conference. Bonduel and Kewaunee have made deep postseason runs in recent years, while Jonas is familiar with Southern Door from his time coaching the Eagles.
