CRIVITZ – Crivitz Held their annual season opening volleyball tournament and taking a third place finish for area teams were the Crivitz Wolverines.
After defeating Goodman 25-11 and 25-18 the Wolverines posted a 25-16 and a close 25-22 win over Marinette. Unfortunately for the Crivitz girls Wabeno and Florence proved to be too tough in the early season goings. Wabeno secured a 25-17 and a 25-18 win while Florence took a 25-15 and a 25-19 win over the tournament host. Wabeno ended the night as the top team while Florence wrapped up the days play in second place.
For the Wolverines Marli Meyers was the kill count leader, piling up 14 over the four matches while also getting four aces, one dig and one assist. Taryn Tracy had a great day as well with her 12 kills, 12 digs, three aces and two assists. Hattie Frievalt was the ace leader for the team with her eight service points. She also posted one kill, nine digs and a team leading 33 assists. Lucy Gruszynski led in the digs category with 15 while also getting one ace and one assist. Kirsten Pusick added up four blocks along with her six kills, one ace, and two digs. Megan Pusick also had a great day with 10 kills, three blocks, two digs, one ace and two assists.
“The tourney went fairly well for us,” said Crivitz head coach Molly Meyers. “I liked seeing how we looked live and it shows what we can improve on for the coming weeks. We will need to work on consistency and communication more, since this is what got us against Florence and Laona-Wabeno. Both of those teams were solid teams that did a better job in those two areas. I have a team that is very hard working and always looking to improve. The first week of practice went well and I look forward to this year and the growth we can make as we progress.”
Niagara also had a good day on the court also ending the day 2-2 in tournament competition. The Badgers took a tough loss to the first place Laona/Wabeno Rebels 25-21 and 25-9 and were set down by Mercer 25-16 and 25-12 before battling back for two consecutive wins. One against Goodman/Pembine 25-20 and 25-12 and one against Coleman. The Coleman match went to three sets as Niagara won the first 25-15 before falling to Coleman in the second 25-17 but came back in the third for a dominant 15-1 finish.
Niagara’s Rachael Walker was wild at the net adding up 24 kills, one block, 10 digs and got six aces. Tying Walker in the ace category for the team was Mallory Sanicki with six. She also added up 12 kills, six blocks, 17 digs and two assists. Peyton Allred also had a very good day with her 12 kills, one block, 16 digs, one ace and two assists. Reagan Frappier posted 10 kills, one block, 39 assists, 12 digs and four aces. Leading the team from the service line was Garce Payette who added up a team leading seven aces while also getting one kills, eight digs and one assist.
