Busy week on the links for Marines

Posted

DENMARK – The Marinette High girls’ golf team hit two different courses last week as its season gets into full swing.

First up was a three-team showdown at Twin Oaks Golf Club as the Marines took on Denmark and Little Chute.

Marinette won the event by a decent margin with a team total of 203 strokes, well ahead of Little Chute’s 234 for second place.

The top three individual scores for the day went to Marinette athletes as Regan Hermandson, a senior, fired a 46, followed by a 49 from sophomore Anna Marzahl and a 50 from senior Kennedy Polomis.

Next up was the Jaguar Classic on Friday, Aug. 30, a 21-team event held at Hilly Haven in De Pere. Playing a scramble format, the Marines shot a 77 on the challenging course to come in 10th place.

The Oconto Blue Devils fired an 84 at the Jaguar Classic to claim 16th. For reference, Shawano finished first with a score of 65.

“Coming off a super low score at home, we are a little disappointed with a 203, but I’m happy we could walk away with a comfortable win even on a bad day,” said Marinette Head Coach Taylor Pedersen, referring to her team’s score of 180 at Little River on Aug. 22. “Regan started out with her worst holes of the day, so to come back from that and shoot a medalist round is impressive. Kennedy’s score is not really where she wants to be, but she has stayed so positive this season so far that she’s letting this one roll right off her back. I’m so proud of her attitude this year. Anna is continuing to get better, even if this score doesn’t necessarily show that. Her situational knowledge has gone up so much since last year. That will definitely help her save some strokes down the road.”
