WPS unveils lifesaving equipment for fire department

PESHTIGO – For the 2024 Rewarding Responders Grant program, Wisconsin Public Service (WPS) unveiled a new gas detector for the Peshtigo Fire Department on Aug. 27.

The $2,000 grant allowed them to purchase a gas detector which will help alert firefighters and members of the public about the presence of hazardous gasses like carbon monoxide.

This device will replace an older model and come in handy for the winter season as homeowners begin to heat their homes more frequently.

WPS media relations representative Matt Cullen presented the device to Fire Chief Charles Gardon and Assistant Chief Joel Ahrens.

“The fire department is very deserving of this,” said Cullen. “We’re more than honored to present this to you. Thank you for all you do.”

A news release from the WPS Foundation stated that the funding is part of the WPS Foundation’s Rewarding Responders Grant program, which supports first responders across northeast and north central Wisconsin. Including this year’s grants, the WPS Foundation has awarded more than $600,000 to help police, fire and emergency medical services agencies strengthen public safety in their communities.

“We are honored to support the brave individuals who work tirelessly to keep our neighborhoods safe, secure and welcoming,” President of the WPS Foundation Beth Straka stated in the news release. “From helping children safely get to school to providing critical medical care, these grants give first responders the invaluable tools they need to serve our communities.”
