Oconto city committee invites more resident leaders

OCONTO – In Wisconsin, Oconto City Council’s Committee of the Whole members agreed two more alder seats should be created to sit beside them. At a meeting Sept. 10, the committee members agreed to move forward with a resolution paving the way to create two new alder positions.

A referendum asking city residents to vote on whether to expand the city council to eight alders from six will be on the November ballot, according to Oconto City Administrator Brittney Burruel. The Committee of the Whole in Oconto includes the alders and the mayor, who votes only to break a tie, she said.

The committee also discussed ways a new tourism commission could lure visitors to the area. A tourism Facebook page could promote a year’s calendar of events. Area businesses could provide marketing announcements with QR codes taking interested people to more information online.

To build a bank of photos to help populate the Facebook page, a committee member suggested a photo contest encouraging people to submit photos taken at various events. “We don’t have someone on staff going around snapping photos, so we thought at contest at our events would give us that,” a council member said.

The Oconto Committee of the Whole also explained why it is pulling out of the housing authority it was involved with for years. The housing authority has had a change in ownership. While the city once provided health insurance to housing authority workers, its insurance company informed the city it no longer needed to, a committee member said.

In another housing-related item, Oconto committee members discussed a transition in code enforcement for property maintenance issues. The change would allow city staffers to enforce code violations related to property upkeep, instead of the Oconto police. This would give the city the opportunity to talk with property owners and help resolve issues related to property maintenance, a committee member said
