City of Gillett breaks ground on Zippel Park upgrades

Posted

GILLETT – Occupying 17 acres in the center of Gillett is Zippel Park, home to the Oconto County Fair, Independence Day celebrations and countless family reunions. City officials are ensuring the park will be able to continue serving the next generation through the new Zippel Park Playground.

Alderperson Jerry Luther spoke during the groundbreaking ceremony on July 7, sharing that the 70-year-old playground will be rebuilt as a “new vibrant, inclusive, play space” in what he called a “truly historic milestone for Gillett.”

“Parks are the heart of a community. They bring people together, encourage healthy lifestyles and create spaces where everyone feels welcome. This new playground represents our commitment to investing in the future of Gillett and providing a safe, fun and inclusive place for children and families to enjoy,” Luther said.

According to the City of Gillett, the upgrades will include a “new inclusive playground, lighted walking paths and trails, a park kiosk, reconditioned sports courts, multiple picnic stations, ample seating and an ADA-compliant restroom.”

This project has been funded through a $45,000 WEDC Vibrant Spaces grant, a $1 million Community Development Block Grant as well as donations from community members.

Project partners include Wisconsin-based companies like the engineering firm MSA Professional Services, BCI Burke Playground Equipment and 8Pine.

After five years of planning, it has taken collaboration from many parties to bring the project to life.

“I would like to extend our sincere gratitude to the city council, our parks committee, city staff, contractors, engineers, volunteers, community partners and everyone who has helped make this project possible,” Luther shared.

He continued, “Most importantly, I’d like to thank the residents of Gillett. Your support, ideas and enthusiasm have shown just how important this project is to our community. This playground is being built for you — for our children, grandchildren, neighbors and visitors who will enjoy it for years to come.”

The City of Gillett plans to have the Zippel Park Playground and upgrades are planned to be completed this fall. Additional funds are being applied for to build a splash pad.
