NORTHEAST WISCONSIN – The American Red Cross, Northeast Wisconsin chapter, is accepting nominations for “local heroes.”
The program seeks to honor members of the community who have done life-saving deeds or have performed exemplary community service.
“Northeast Wisconsin is filled with remarkable individuals who are driving positive change in our communities, and this is our chance to honor them for their contributions,” Red Cross Northeast Wisconsin Chapter Executive Director Rebecca Rockhill said.
The American Red Cross, which was founded in 1881, has always been a leader in disaster relief and safety training to everyone.
So, they wish to give back to honor those who exemplify the Red Cross vision.
“The Red Cross has always looked for how we can honor our heroes,” Rockhill added.
She detailed that this celebration takes place all across the country, including Northwest, Southwest, Southeast, and, of course, Northeast Wisconsin.
Northwest Wisconsin has a Hero’s Breakfast, Southwest has a golf outing, Southeast does a Hero’s Gala, and Northeast Wisconsin also has a golf outing, taking place on Aug. 25 at Thornberry Creek.
“It’s one of our biggest fundraisers as well,” Rockhill added.
Some of the past winners of the award have been first responders in Hurricane Katrina relief, rushed back into burning buildings to save trapped animals or have volunteered in every instance they could.
One winner donated 76 gallons of blood to the Red Cross over his lifetime.
Winners of the award are honored at a reception, and they will receive a glass award and a framed photo of themselves with the hero logo in the background to commemorate their achievement.
Nominees come from any of the Red Cross Northeast Wisconsin counties: Brown, Calumet, Door, Fond du Lac, Kewaunee, Manitowoc, Marathon, Marinette, Oconto, Outagamie, Portage, Shawano, Sheboygan, Waupaca, Waushara, Winnebago, Onedia Nation, and three counties in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan — Delta, Dickinson, and Menominee.
The categories for heroes are blood Services Hero, Disaster Relief Hero, Emergency Response Hero, Military Hero, Red Cross Hero and Youth and Young Adult Hero.

Nominations are due by May 31.
