GREEN BAY – On Jan. 16, the Green Bay Packers brought together middle school students from across Wisconsin for “Empower,” a day-long leadership event designed to inspire young people to become positive leaders in their communities held at the Resch Expo.
Approximately 1,000 students and chaperones from cities and towns across the state, including Suring, Madison, Rice Lake, Kenosha, Door County, Milwaukee and greater Green Bay metro took part in the free program.
The event, fully funded by the Packers, was at no cost to attending schools beyond transportation to and from the venue.
“Empower” provided participants — sixth through eighth graders — a full schedule of leadership activities and presentations focused on resilience, encouraging students to become their best selves and driving progress in their communities.
Students engaged with several speakers, including keynote presenter Darryl Bellamy Jr.
Bellamy stated, “…I made the shift from fearless to fearing a little less to help people and students and anyone else who's watching know that the feelings that they feel are normal; there's not something wrong with them. Now it's time for them to take action. It's all about digging down and helping them see that they're not alone in their journey.
“Like having them hear other people share their fears, breaking down those barriers slowly but surely, but getting everybody comfortable in a space where they can stand and actually share those things outwardly. It's really about inspiring students and achievement. We're looking for our students to see themselves in the future and really overcome any fears that they may have.”
The day also included breakout sessions.
The first breakout session featured Packers alumni Scott Wells and Earl Dotson.
The second session includes a hands-on care kit packing activity to benefit Ronald McDonald House Charities.
During the third session, attendees crossed the street for a Lambeau Field tour.
Edison Middle School student Taylor Werchek summarized Bellmay’s presentation by stating, “I think it helped me believe in myself a little more and realize that not everything is as scary as you think it is.”
