Northwoods Sports Recreation and Community Center presents Kids Small Business Fair

Posted

BEECHER – The Northwoods Sports Recreation and Community Center (NSRCC) will host their first ever Kids Small Business Fair on Saturday, Feb. 8.

The event will encourage young entrepreneurs from the Beecher, Dunbar and Pembine area and beyond to learn responsibility and self-confidence through product sales.

NSRCC Director Amanda Cox provided some insight on the upcoming Kids Small Business Fair, “by becoming a young entrepreneur, children are able to gain a sense of responsibility as well as grow their confidence. Being your own boss can provide a child with a high sense of accomplishment, encouraging them to strive for higher goals in the future. Our goal is that with the support of the community, local and surrounding, we are able to give that to the youth of today.”

Children ages nine through 17 are welcome to participate in the business fair and sell products. However, to create an atmosphere where participants can experience running their own business, the NSRCC put in place participation rules as well as a parents code of conduct.

The Kids Small Business Fair document explains that “parents can assist their child when needed, but children must be able to prepare all items to be sold from start to finish, take/fulfill orders and answer questions and take payment and make change.” Children with special needs or disabilities are welcome to participate with any necessary parental assistance.

The parents code of conduct informs guardians that, while they are expected to remain on the venue premise while the business fair is running, they cannot interact with customers. The NSRCC encourages guardians to “sit in the back of the booth, read a book and act like you’re not listening. Removing yourself (figuratively speaking) is what makes this an incredible learning experience for your child.”

The Kids Small Business Fair aims to promote a variety of small businesses run by entrepreneurs. Handmade or storebought items, food, games or services are all welcome to be sold at the event so long as children have an “active role in the acquisition and/or production of their product.” Prohibited items include raw food, fundraisers or items sold on behalf of parents, such as multi-level marketing (MLM) products.

At the fair, each small business has an 8’ x 8’ space and should bring all of their own supplies, such as a table, chairs, canopy or any other necessary equipment. If food is being sold, a trash can and gloves for serving must be brought with. Limited access to power sources can be provided.

Cox encourages all children with an interest in business to participate, providing some advice “Do not be afraid. Take the chance, work hard and you’ll never be disappointed in what you accomplish.”

The Kids Small Business Fair will be held in the upper level of the front building at the Northwoods Sports Recreation and Community Center, N17112 US Hwy 141, Beecher, Wis. The event will run from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 8. Registration is free and closes Sunday, Jan. 26. For more information or to register, contact Amanda Cox at acox@nsrccwi.com.
