Marinette School District Board accepts offer for former Garfield Elementary School property

Proposed redevelopment would create senior housing while preserving historic building

MARINETTE — The Marinette School District Board of Education voted unanimously at its October 26 meeting to accept a $218,000 offer to purchase the former Garfield Elementary School property at 1615 Carney Ave. in Marinette.

The offer was submitted by Woda Cooper Companies, Inc., a Columbus, Ohio-based developer specializing in affordable housing. The company proposes converting the former school building into housing for adults aged 55 and older.

The board’s action follows discussions between Woda Cooper and the City of Marinette about the need for additional housing options for older adults in the community. Through these conversations, the city connected the developer with the Marinette School District to explore the potential redevelopment of the Garfield property.

After touring the property, Woda Cooper representatives determined that the building and location were well-suited for the proposed development. The project would create additional housing options while preserving and restoring the historic structure, giving the property a new purpose while maintaining its connection to Marinette’s history.

“We are pleased that this proposal offers an opportunity to give the former Garfield Elementary School a new purpose while preserving an important part of our community’s history,” said Superintendent Matthew Smith. “We look forward to seeing how this property could continue to serve the Marinette community in the years ahead.”

Founded in 1990, Woda Cooper Companies, Inc. is an employee-owned development and property management firm with approximately 800 employees across 19 states. The company has experience in new construction, historic renovation, rehabilitation, and adaptive reuse of existing properties.

The sale remains subject to the terms of the agreement, including the completion of necessary financing and closing requirements.
