Life-saving awards presented at Peshtigo Common Council meeting

PESHTIGO – The Peshtigo Common Council held their most recent regular meeting Tuesday, May 6. During the meeting a series of prestigious awards were presented.

Police Chief Fred Popp took the floor and began the presentation, “This night is not about me. It’s about the recognition of Officer [Cody] Cohan and the Rennes Health Group that together, as a team coordinated effort, were able to provide life saving measures. They were able to…provide resuscitation to a male patient who was under care and had gone unconscious. Thankfully, the life saving measures that were taken prolonged his life.”

This life-saving event took place on March 17 when Officer Cohan heard the call over his radio and rushed to the scene before he could formally be asked.

Chief Popp explained that by taking this initiative and working quickly with the staff of Rennes Health Group, as well as EMS and other responders, they were able to successfully resuscitate the man before he was transported for further medical attention.

Officer Cohan was then presented with the Certificate of Commendation Life-Saving Award, as well as a pin that he will wear with his uniform. Chief Popp added that Officer Cohan has been with the department for less than a year, making him the fastest officer to earn this award that Chief Popp has seen.

Rennes Group President Nicole Schingick recognized the four nurses who were also involved in the life-saving efforts, “You embody everything we stand for at Rennes, and tonight’s recognition is certainly deserved. Thank you all for being here to honor these everyday heroes. Together, we truly do make a difference.”

Jasmine Granius, Dana Beyers, Sarah Bailey and Nikki Bebo were presented with awards “In Grateful Recognition” for their service.

In council updates, a public hearing was held for “Ordinance No. 2025-02 an Ordinance Amending City of Peshtigo Buildings and Building Regulations Ordinance Article 1, Sections 10-3 and 10-4 of the City of Peshtigo Ordinances.”

These updated ordinances were made to bring the city up to date with current state standards.

No comments were made during the hearing and the ordinance was passed.

Mayor Katie Berman gave three proclamations for National EMS Week, National Public Works Week and National Police Week. All three proclamations were approved.

Mayor Berman continued, presenting the council with information regarding the State and Local Cybersecurity Grant Program (SLCGP). She explained that the grant is for $100,000 and that she would like to apply for it to update outdated technology and offset the costs of cybersecurity implementation.

Mayor Berman added that she reached out to Bay Lake and was given a $3,000-maximum quote for their team to complete the application, with funding to come from the general fund.

More information about the SLCGP application will be discussed at the finance meeting, which will meet later this month.

The judiciary committee shared their recommendation for an “Ordinance Permitting Keeping of Chickens.” A public hearing regarding the ordinance will be held during the June 3 common council meeting before the vote is conducted.

In other news, a parcel split will be approved when the owner updates the typographical errors and a temporary “Class B” alcohol beverage license application from the Peshtigo Youth Baseball, Inc. for usage at the Christopher Mylener Memorial Tournament on June 6 through 8 was approved.
