Dr. George Harris passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family, at The Marinette Cottages Memory Care, on November 5, 2025. He was born on Sept. 4, 1942, to George Stafford and Helen Virginia Harris in Detroit, Mich., and grew up in the Detroit area.
He graduated from Albion College in 1964 with a Bachelor of Arts degree; the University of Michigan School of Dentistry in 1968 with a Docter of Dental Surgery (DDS) degree: and the University of Michigan Graduate Program of Orthodontics in 1972 with a Master of Science (MS) degree in Orthodontics.
He served in the National Public Health Service on the Standing Rock Indian Reservation in McLaughlin, South Dakota, from 1968 to 1970 as the head of dental services, achieving the rank of Lieutenant Commander before receiving an honorable discharge.
Dr. Harris completed post graduate education at the Charles H. Tweed Orthodontic Course in 1980 and went on to teach Tweed orthodontics internationally and at the Tweed Foundation in Tucson, Arizona. He served as chairman of the foundation and published numerous professional articles.
He practiced orthodontics in Detroit before moving to Marinette, WI., in 1973 and establishing his private practice in Menominee, MI. He practiced there for 42 years and deeply loved his work and research.
He cherished his cabin in Cedar River, MI., which he built with the help of friends and enjoyed for more than 40 wonderful, memorable years.
He is survived by his devoted wife and best friend of 61 years, Enid; his children, George (Lisa) Harris and Wendy Harris-Magas; his grandchildren, Bailey Harris, Jacalyn Harris, Demitri Magas, and Damon Magas; his brother John Harris; and his sister-in-law Julie (Ed) Lowery-Wilkins.
The family extends heartfelt thanks to all the caregivers at The Cottages for their compassionate care for George and the emotional support to Enid, to Jessica Flaeschel, NP from Belin Health and her staff, and to Compassus Hospice for their care and support during his final days.
A private family service will be held, and burial will take place at Forrest Home Cemetery in Marinette, WI.
