David Richard Thomas passed away in Menominee, Michigan, on June 6th at the age of 78. He was born on May 22, 1948, in Ann Arbor, Michigan, and lived a life filled with community, creativity, adventure, and a constant and evolving search for meaning. Dave was beloved by more people than can be listed here.
Nevertheless: Dave is survived by his partner, Kay Rich; his daughter, Meg Thomas; his son, Trevor Thomas; his son-in-law, Benjamin Paloff; his grandchild, Elliot Paloff; his grandson, Ezekiel Paloff; his brothers, Dan Thomas and Doug Thomas; and his sisters, Laura Aamodt and Sue Thomas. His memory will be a blessing for the rest of our lives to those of us who knew him.
Dave earned a BA from Hope College and later received an MLS from the University of Michigan. His education, which continued through subsequent decades of self-study, was a reflection of both his inexhaustible curiosity and his commitment to learning, qualities which guided him throughout his life. He was a media specialist for the Marinette Public Schools, where he shared his knowledge and enthusiasm with students and colleagues, and also worked as a freelance videographer, bringing joy and a thoughtful eye to his projects.
Dave played bass in a local band, The Michigan Shivers, where he was affectionately known as “Baby Dave," a moniker that delighted his friends and family. He was an avid bicyclist and kayaker and was nourished by being outdoors and moving through the world with energy and purpose. Dave loved speaking Spanish and traveling to Spanish-speaking countries, and he believed deeply in the power of human connection and communication.
One of Dave’s most remarkable gifts was his ability to make friends wherever he went. He had a natural way of putting people at ease and making them feel at home. He will be remembered for his humor, his openness, and the way he made ordinary moments feel special. We were lucky to have him in our lives.
A Celebration of David's life will be held at a later date. Details will be announced by Berth & Rosenthal Funeral Home when they become available.
