Wolverines Hold Off Cougars; Take M&O Lead

Crivitz moved to 5-0 in M&O Conference play on Tuesday, defeating Coleman 49-42 and handing the Cougars their first conference defeat. Still, the Cougar side took an optimistic tone after the game.
Crivitz led 11-0 early in the game. The Wolverines played well out of the gates, playing tough defense and scoring some points, including a Tegan Werner 3-pointer in the middle of the run.
Coleman didn’t get on the board until nine minutes had gone by, when Joe Olsen hit a 3-pointer to make it 12-3.
From there, the Cougars clawed their way back, and Tristan Kostreva actually handed his team a lead going into halftime, 20-19, with a shot late in the first half.
“The fact we made it a game when we didn’t score until the nine-minute mark in the first half shows you how well we played defensively and how big of a heart our kids have, because they kept fighting tonight,” Coleman coach Jeff Bronson said.
The second half was a seesaw of scoring. Crivitz took the lead back on a Sean Christiansen shot, but Mitchell VanDeWalle nailed a 3-pointer to put Coleman back in front.
From there, there were three ties and two lead changes in the next couple minutes before Coleman took a 31-30 advantage on a shot by Tyler Rennie.
Crivitz took the lead for the final time, 32-31, on a basket by Sean Christiansen, then extended it on a triple by Werner.
Coleman cut it to two, 43-41, with about 90 seconds left, but the Wolverines made their free throws and hung on to win. “Give Coleman credit, they played hard, they didn’t make a ton of mistakes”, said Crivitz Coach Jeff Baumann, “defensively I thought they did a lot of good things. We played hard and took care of things at the end of the game when we had to and that’s the sign of a good team.”
Werner’s 21 points were a team-high for Crivitz. Christiansen scored 12. Olsen led Coleman in scoring with 12 points and Evan Hockers scored 10.
Coleman’s offense could use some polishing, but the Cougars go into Thursday’s home game against Suring (2-4 M&O) in fairly good spirits.
“The kids played hard. They did everything we asked them to do. We still have to find an easier way to score at times, but defensively, we were very good tonight and we frustrated a very good basketball team tonight. We have to find ways to stop hurting ourselves when we have the ball,” Bronson said.
Crivitz (10-0 overall, 5-0 M&O) goes to Gillett (3-2 M&O) on Thursday.

Bulldogs Beat Pesky
Wolves 56-46

Free throws and 3-pointers kept Algoma in the game against Peshtigo on Thursday, but the Bulldogs were able to hold the Wolves at arm’s length in a 56-46 win.
Peshtigo came out strong in the first half, but the Bulldogs were in the double bonus with eight minutes left. With free throws boosting the Wolves’ offensive output, Peshtigo led just 33-28 at the break.
Algoma scored six points off 14 free throws and hit four 3-pointers, including three by Owen Roberson, in the first half. Roberson would finish with 23 points after two more free throws and two more triples in the second half.
“I thought we got off to a pretty good start,” Peshtigo coach Jason Boucher said. “We were getting the shots we wanted, we were defending without fouling, and then I don’t know what happened. Things turned south fast on defense. We fouled way too much.”
Peshtigo started the second half strong, leading by as much as 18.
“We started the second half the same way we started the game. We were up five at half and the first two or three minutes we bumped it up to 10 or 12,” Boucher said. “Again, we started fouling too much. We started moving the ball on offense, being patient, and getting it where we wanted.”
Will McMahon led Peshtigo in scoring with 14 points, 12 of which came in the first half. Kaine Fort scored all 13 of his points in the second half and Kavin Kleikamp added 12.

Offense, Fall to Vikings

The Marines went 9-46 shooting from the field, including 5-26 from 3-point range.
“We were just unable to capitalize offensively, we were below 30 percent from the field as a team, and it’s tough to dig yourself out of a hole while shooting that poorly,” Marinette coach Connor Nelson said.
