Wallace (Wally) Ward

Wallace (Wally) Ward, 80, of Porterfield, passed away on Saturday, May 4th, 2024, at Residence by Rennes in Peshtigo.

He was born in Harlan County, Kentucky to Pearl and Allena Ward on August 14th, 1943, in their family home and was delivered by his grandmother.

Wally spent his childhood in Kentucky and then moved to Chicago, Illinois. He would go on to meet the love of his life, Shirley, in their 20’s. They went on to get married on April 1st, 1969, and raised 5 children together.

Wally disliked living in the city so in the late 70’s he packed up his family and moved to Porterfield where he remained to this day. While living on the farm he raised dairy cows while later transitioning to veal farming. He then went back to driving semi and worked for Yellow Freight for many years until retirement. He made many friends in the community both by farming and driving semi. Wally was a proud member of the Teamster Local 328.

Wally was an excellent provider and was not afraid to get his hands dirty. He worked hard, often from sunup to sundown; whether it be driving semi, working on the farm, spending time in his vast garden, or just doing general upkeep on the many projects he was always working on. He could always be found outside either chatting with the many neighbors that would stop by, sitting on the patio listening to music, or “tinkering around.”

To know Wally was to know that he loved to laugh, enjoyed hearing a good joke (and also tell one), exceeded at the fine art of bantering, and loved to talk about growing up in Harlan County. Above all, however, Wally loved being a husband, a father, and a good friend to all who he cared about. If Wally loved you, you never had to wonder- you just knew. Each phone call or conversation would end in a “be careful” or “I love you.”

Wally had a very special place in his heart for his grandchildren, and after retirement spent time with them almost daily. He loved to tease them, take them to town, and taught them all the things that only a “Pa” could teach.

Wally is survived by his 5 children, Rob (Shannon) Neisius; Rona (Steve) Smith, Ed Ward, Shane Davis (Paul Dura) and Mandy Ward; Grandchildren include Jessica, Samantha, Kalee, Noah, Logan, Jonah and Paden and 2 great-grandchildren, Lilli and Easton. Wally is also survived by sisters, Rebecca (Pat) and Barbara, and many cousins, nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his Wife, Shirley; Mother and Father, Pearl and Allena; Mother and Father-in law, Ted and Rose Srednick; brothers Ben, Arnold, Ace, Coy and Howard and many aunts, uncles, in-laws and cousins.

Thank you to Compassus Hospice for caring for Wally with dignity. Also, many thanks to the staff and Residence by Rennes for their loving and compassionate care provided to him during the last several weeks of his life. The smiles that the staff brought to his face told it all.

Per Wally’s wishes, there will be no funeral. A Celebration of Life will be held at a date and time to be determined. Thielen Funeral Home of Marinette is assisting the family.
