Vivian Marie Porras

Vivian Marie Porras, 97, passed away Thursday, May 22, 2024, at Roubal’s Care and Rehab Facility in Stephenson, Mi. 

Born Sept. 24, 1926, in Libertyville, Ill., to the late Orval and Ethel (Casey) Jarrett, she graduated from Stephenson High School in May 1944 with Salutatorian Honors. She then attended Northern Michigan Teachers College (now NMU) in Marquette, Mi. on a full Academic Scholarship.

She met the love of her life Henry C. Porras, Jr. in 1943 and at the end of World War II they were married June 1, 1946. They had many happy, memorable adventures raising their family on a farm in Wallace and in retirement they traveled the United States.

She was awarded the Menominee County Fair Homemaker Queen of the Year award at the County Fair in July of 1981 and Pinegrove Extension Club of Wallace Homemaker of the year award in April of 1982. She loved making crafts, photo albums, knitting and sewing.

In addition to raising three boys, her greatest achievement was becoming a Certified First United Methodist Church Lay Speaker in 1979. For 25 years she provided pulpit supply services for absent or vacationing Pastors for her Church and others of the Community. A devoted member of the First United Methodist Church of Stephenson, she was a lifelong member of the Church Choir and taught Sunday school.

Survivors include her son, James and daughter-in-law, Terrie (Pedersen) Porras; nephew, Dean and wife Wendy (Harring) Hanson and six grandchildren and five great grandchildren.

Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Henry II; sons, Henry III and Gary, and sisters and spouses, Mildred (Jarrett) and Walter Macky and June (Jarrett) and Norbert Hanson.

Visitation was held at Emmanual Lutheran Church in Menominee on Wednesday, May 29 from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. with the Funeral Service at 6 p.m., followed by a luncheon in the Fellowship Hall. Burial was held on Thursday, May 30 at the Mellen Township Cemetery at 11 a.m. Donations and gifts can be made on her behalf to Anderson Diehm Funeral Home in Stephenson.
