Suring Historical Society Gets $5,000 from Russel Brock Family
The Suring Area Historical Society (SAHS) recently received a $5,000 donation from Russel Brock and his family in memory of Russel’s wife, Barb. The funds will be utilized to help the SAHS to restore Suring’s Opera House historic building which houses many items collected from Suring and the surrounding communities. Renovations for the building are estimated to cost $200,000 which include repairing the foundation and fixing the roof.
The SAHS thanks the Brock Family for their continued generous support and interest in their efforts and Russel’s kind words of encouragement. Russel is hoping his donation will start a wave of additional funds to be given to the SAHS to help the Society achieve their fundraising goal.
The Museum was opened in 2016 and the displays grow every year. The Society is very excited to give tours of the gymnasium and stage upstairs where Suring High School Graduation Commencements were held until 1949. Suring High School Class Plays and Local Youth League Plays were a big hit at the Opera House. Many Friday and Saturday dances and basketball games were the main activities in the gym. Can anyone imagine playing basketball with a wood stove to heat the gym? Come read about the activities that is written on the walls of the Opera House.
The SAHS, first organized in 2007, have organized many fundraisers to raise money for building repairs including brat/burger frys, annual breakfast and annual All Class Reunion/Homecoming Labor Day weekend. So, they thank Russel for his donation and his plea for others to follow his example to make the restoration of the Opera House a reality.
