Peshtigo & Marinette Pick Up Wins As Post Season Approahes

Bulldogs Beat  Wolves 3-2
on Bauman’s 2nd
Half Goal

A game-winning goal by Grant Bauman with less than nine minutes to play snuck Peshtigo past Algoma by a 3-2 scoreline.
The goal was Bauman’s second of the game. The other gave Peshtigo a 2-1 lead with 27 minutes left, but Algoma tied the game with 9:41 to play, 65 seconds before Bauman’s second.
Cameron Williams scored Peshtigo’s other goal in the first period.
Peshtigo got the win over a solid Algoma team, but they’ll want to clean up some mental errors that led to goals in the game.
“Unfortunately, both their 2 goals were handed to them by our mistakes,” Peshtigo coach Sam Wargula said. “The game should’ve been 3-0.”
Peshtigo was seeded 17th in its Division 4 bracket. The Bulldogs will face 16 seed Howards Grove/Elkhart Lake/Glenbeulah in a play-in game on Tuesday before the winner moves on to face top seeded Sheboygan Christian/Sheboygan Lutheran on Oct. 20.
Marines Nip Truckers
1-0 in NEC Finale

A first-half goal by sophomore Avery Waloway proved to be the winner for Marinette against Clintonville on Monday, as the Marines prevailed 1-0 on senior night.
“It’s usually a battle against them,” Marinette coach Jason Smerchek said. “To get a home win is always good, to get a conference win is good as well, so it’s nice to have the seniors go out with a victory at home.”
Waloway’s goal came after 26 minutes had run off the clock, set up in part by senior midfielder Dominic Smerchek.
“You can’t really take the ball from him, so he sets us up pretty well,” Jason Smerchek, Dominic’s father and the Marines’ head coach, said.
The win was Marinette’s final game at home this season. For the Smercheks, it was bittersweet to play one last game in Marinette.
“It’s always special watching your kid play,” coach Smerchek said. “He’s played soccer at a pretty high level for a long time. Four-year starter, so it’s kind of bittersweet. It’s fun to coach him, but he’s going to be done pretty soon.”
Smerchek is one of six seniors on the team, along with Owen Hansen, Kyle Golueke, Darian Mills, and Landen McMahon.
Marinette was recently selected as a No. 11 seed in Division 3, facing No. 6 Xavier on Thursday, Oct. 20.

The Storm’s lone goal came from a penalty kick.
Peshtigo Plays to a
Scoreless Draw
in Iron Mt.

Peshtigo and Iron Mountain played to a goalless draw in Iron Mountain on Monday.
Peshtigo coach Sam Wargula said his team came out flat in the first half but controlled the second half, hitting the post several times to come within inches of taking a lead.
“We just couldn’t seem to catch a break,” he said. “Another disheartening game where I’d say we otherwise played well.”
