Panthers Sneak Past Bulldogs in Double Overtime

Peshtigo and Oconto Falls love a good double overtime game.

Last year, Oconto Falls beat the Bulldogs 56-55 to advance to the regional final. On Thursday, it was the Panthers once again coming away with a double OT victory, this time by a 62-58 score.

It was a tightly contested first half, with Peshtigo leading 19-18 at the break. Peshtigo came out hot in the second half, taking a lead of 13, 39-26, on a pair of free throws by Sydney Lund.

The Oconto Falls comeback was swift, however. Oconto Falls scored 16 of the next 21 points to cut it to a one-score game, 45-42, with three minutes left. 

“We built a nice little lead in the second half, and it’s one of those games where your gut just doesn’t feel like it was going to hold, because it’s a game of runs,” Peshtigo coach Lance Pesch said. “We turned it over, missed some free throws.”

Peshtigo got the next basket to restore a five-point lead, but Jaden Reed made two free throws and Hailey Peitersen knocked down a triple to tie the game at 47. Alexis Euclide then made two free throws to give the Panthers a lead.

Lund made a basket with six seconds left to send the game to overtime.

In overtime, the teams each scored six points each, with Lund again playing hero hitting a 3 for Peshtigo to tie the game at 55 with 12 seconds left and sending the game to double overtime.

In double overtime, the teams were tied at 58 when Hailey Peitersen scored four points to pull ahead 62-58, where the game would end.

“It feels great,” she said after the win. “Coming off last year, a double overtime win against Peshtigo, to do it again really feels great. It’s good momentum for the rest of our season. We just lost to Shawano, so it’s great to actually finish as a team and get the job done.”

Oconto Falls coach Tim Solarek said Peitersen sat out less than a minute during the game, despite the two extra periods.

“I think she came out for 30 seconds. She played the whole game,” he said. “She’s one of our senior captains, so we kind of look for her to do stuff, and she hit that layup and two free throws to give us a 3-point lead.”

He is hoping next year will be less eventful when the two teams meet.

“I told the girls on the bench, ‘next year, when we come back, I don’t want to play in overtime,’” he said. “It’s too stressful for me, but the kids looked like they were having fun. Tons of nerve-wracking events up and down, back and forth, the lead changed probably 1,000 times there in those two overtimes. I thought they played really well.”

Lund finished the game with 25 points (8-15 FG, 8-16 FT) to lead Peshtigo. Jaci Tonn had 17 (5-6 FG, 4-4 FT) and Emma Gilligan got eight (3-6 FG, 1-2 FT).

It was a game full of foul trouble. Three Oconto Falls starters, Grace Dainski, Kati Raddatz and Euclide fouled out in the game, while Allison Peters, Tonn and Lund all fouled out for Peshtigo.

Euclide and Peitersen scored 23 points each to pace the Panthers.

 

Blue Devils Blast Blazers for Conference Road Win

Oconto’s girls made easy work of Green Bay NEW Lutheran/Providence Academy on Monday, winning 57-23.

By halftime, the Blue Devils held a 35-7 lead, with Lianna Baxter leading the way offensively.

The forward scored a game-high 22 points in the win on 8-for-15 shooting. She also made five of her eight free throws. She led the team with five steals and five blocks as well.

Hannah Moe’s seven rebounds led the team. She scored seven points as well.

Addisyn Viestenz scored an efficient 12 points on 6-for-8 shooting and Kyanne Wusterbarth added five on a 2-for-5 night.

 

Lena Blowsout Goodman-Pembine in Non- Conference Match 

The Lena Wildcat girls were able to get themselves a nice victory Tuesday night when they shutdown the Goodman/Pembine Patriots 49-19.

The Patriots found it very difficult to get to the hoop as the Wildcats stopped them at three first half points while scoring 37 for themselves.

Leading Lena was Natalie McNurlen with 13 points. Claire Brooks, Whitney Potter and Chaela Rabas all posted six points each.

 

Bulldogs Struggle on Offense In Lopsided Loss to Storm

Peshtigo struggled offensively in a 47-27 loss to Kewaunee on Monday.

The Bulldogs scored just 16 points in the first half and found even less success in the second half, where they scored 11 points.

Jaci Tonn led Peshtigo with 10 points, while Sydney Lund and Brooklyn Phillips each scored five apiece.

Kewaunee saw Mykenzie Uhlers and Taylor Schleis score nine points each to lead the way.

 

Jaguars Use Big First Half to Stop Marines 59-33

Ashwaubenon beat Marinette 59-33 on Thursday night despite Hannah Chenier’s best offensive efforts. The Jaguars grabbed a 38-18 halftime lead and never looked back.

Chenier went 9-for-14 from the field and made both her free throws to lead the way with 20 points. She also grabbed a team-high six rebounds and five steals. 

Lindsey Wingender scored five points for the Marines as well.

Lauren Mader lead the Jaguars with 11 points.

 

Tigers Come From Behind to Beat Maroons 46-42

Gillett defeated Menominee 46-42 in a game where the Tigers weathered the storm and picked their moments to escape with the win.

Menominee came out with pressure and a zone defense to try and make life difficult for the Tigers. 

“I thought we came out and put good pressure on them. We were trying to do different things out of our zone and trying to create some turnovers, speed teams up, and I thought for the most part we did a good job,” Menominee coach Lucas Chouinard said. “We just have to do a better job of rotations, getting back at full speed and covering people a little bit better so we can get the deflections and stuff. That will come with more practice time and more comfortability that we get with that pressure.”

That led to a 13-8 lead at the end of the first quarter. At halftime, Menominee still held a 25-22 lead.

At halftime, Gillett coach Gary Regal said his team talked about keeping with it and finding their moments to take the lead.

“We talked about that at halftime. If we could just hang around, hang around, and then get a few breaks go one way or the other, we thought that we could attack on the weak side and get some layups on the cross-court passes,” he said. “We got some of them, and probably could have had a few more, but we’ll take what we got.”

Their first lead came at 35-34. With 4:20 left in the game, they stretched the lead to three. 

With 1:14 left in the game, after Menominee had tied the game, Alaina Herzog hit a shot to give Gillett the lead back at 42-40. They built the lead to 45-40 on two free throws by Carleigh Kaczmarik, and held on from there.

Coach Chouinard stated,“We’ve got to be more disciplined as far as a team and individuals. When referees call the game a certain way, we have to be able to adjust to that. We didn’t do a good job of adjusting, and we still continued to foul at a high rate, which gave them opportunities at the free throw line, and credit to them for cashing in on that tonight.”

Gillett was lead by Kaczmarik and Cheyenne Krueger who scored 12 points each. Herzog added 11 for the Tigers.

Coach Regal commented on Kaczmarek’s work ethic,“she’s a girl that works every night after practice, every night, so I’m glad for the success for her.”

Menominee was paced by Kennedy Olson who posted a game high 20 points. Rylee Doyle and Madison Derusha added six each.

Coach Regal had this to say about trying to defend Olson. “We had some possessions where we did front her and she hurt us. After we fronted and got some weak side help, we did a pretty good job with her.”

 

Blue Devils Ground Warhawk at Gillett Tourney 69-33

Addisyn Viestenz and Lianna Baxter combined for 44 points in a 69-33 Gillett Tournament win over Weyauwega-Fremont on Thursday.

Viestenz shot 6-for-13 from the field and 6-for-9 from the free throw line, scoring 21 points. Baxter was 9-for-19 overall and 4-for-6 from the line. The pair also led Oconto in rebounding, with Viestenz posting eight rebounds and Baxter recording 10.

Baxter led the Blue Devils with four assists and two blocks. She also had five steals. Viestenz had six steals to lead the team.

Kyanne Wusterbarth scored 10 points on a 5-for-7 shooting day.

Oconto led 32-16 at halftime and outscored Weyauwega-Fremont 37-17 in the second half.

 

Wolverines Run Away From Patriots 49-8

Crivitz held Goodman-Pembine to eight points in a 41-point victory on Thursday. The Wolverines jumped out to a 28-4 first half lead.

The Wolverines had a balanced scoring output in the 49-8 win, with Bailey Jose-Bemis leading the team with eight. Megan Pusick, Cilena Guns and Nilea Guns each scored seven.

Three players scored in the game for G-P. R. Streitzel scored four points with the Gilberts adding two each.

 

Blue Devils Build Big First Half Lead, Coast to 60-29 Win

Oconto’s girls outscored Gillett 40-8 in the first half of a 60-29 win on Wednesday.

Oconto’s Lianna Baxter led all scorers with 29 points. She was 11-for-18 shooting, also making all six of her free throws and securing 13 rebounds.

Hannah Moe led Oconto with 14 rebounds, also scoring eight points. Gracie Simon scored eight and Addisyn Viestenz scored nine.

Gillett’s leading scorer was Macy Franti, who scored eight points on 2-for-7 shooting. Alaina Herzog and Carleigh Kaczmarek scored six and five, respectively.
