Michele J. Hansel

Michele (“Shelly”) Jeanne Hansel , 41, of Sun Prairie, formerly of Oconto and Green Bay, passed away Sunday, Sept. 25, 2022, after a war with cancer that lasted over 10 years.

Born March 20, 1981 in Green Bay, she grew up in Oconto and attended Oconto Public Schools, graduating from Oconto High School in 1999.

In High School, she enjoyed academics, band, forensics, and playing parts on and off stage in school plays. She earned a Bachelor of Science degree at UW-Stevens Point in 2003, and a Master of Science degree at the University of Minnesota in 2007.

She realized her passion for helping others find creative solutions and overcome challenges through her career in Occupational Therapy (OT). She then moved to Rochester, Mn. in 2008 and excelled as an OT at Rochester Community Behavioral Health Hospital, where she worked for over 10 years. While there, she enjoyed the friendships she made with coworkers, and the connections she made with OT students while supervising their field work.

After moving to Sun Prairie, WI, in 2019, she began work at Mendota Mental Health Institute, where she hoped to work for many years. While her career was important to her, she cherished her three children and one grandchild. She was proud of them and wanted to do anything and everything to support them in their happiness in life.

With her family, she especially enjoyed taking vacations (especially camping and trips to WI Dells), playing video games and board games (especially her many Monopoly games), painting, baking elaborate birthday cakes, knitting, cross-stitch and being creative. She was clever and crafty, making many treasured handmade gifts for her immediate and extended family members.

Intelligent, observant, insightful, patient, strong, witty, and thoughtful, she was a good confidante and friend. She was funny and uplifted loved ones with a comment, even with her own struggles.

Survivors include three children, Cecilia, Sonya and Xavier (“Issac”) Amon; a grandson; her parents, Michael and Jeanne Hansel; two sisters, Amanda (Clifford) Herzog and Marcella (Daniel) Lorenz; nieces and nephew, Amelia and Benjamin Herzog and Evelyn and Leila Lorenz; her Godparents, William Campbell and Barbara McClain and many aunts; uncles; cousins; other family members and friends.

She was preceded in death by an infant brother, Daniel Hansel; maternal grandparents, Herbert and Marcella Campbell and paternal grandparents, Leonard and Aldona Hansel.

Family will receive relatives and friends at Rhodes Charapata Funeral Home, 121 Chicago St., Oconto, on Saturday, Oct. 8, 2022 from 9 a.m. until time of the service at 1 p.m., followed by interment at Oconto Catholic Cemetery. Online condolences can be made at www.rhodescharapata.com.
