Maroons Best Marines in Hard Fought M&M Game

The Marinette Marines battled hard but couldn’t match Menominee’s 83 points in a 14-point M&M Game loss on Thursday.

Menominee scored 47 points in the first half, but Marinette hung around and improved its defense in the second half, holding Menominee to 36. 

It was the efficiency of Menominee that made the difference. Marinette shot the ball well, but the Maroons were very good in that regard.

Aidan Bellisle scored 26 points, Brady Schultz had 23 and Cooper Conway scored 16. Brady Badker chipped in 11.

“It was really nice to have Coop back. He’s just a physical, strong presence, and I thought we really settled for way too many outside shots throughout the entire game,” Menominee coach Sam Larson said. “The whole plan was to try and get the ball inside, and for whatever reason, we were unable to do that for long stretches of the game. Any time we were able to get the ball inside to Cooper or Schultz, it was productive for us, so that was a nice thing to see and something that we probably need to get to more often.”

Marinette got 14 points from both Jake and Sam Sommerfeldt, while Carson Erdman added 13 and Keegan Polomis had 12. 

Marinette coach Matt Joost said it was probably the best game Erdman had played in purple and white. If his team plays like it did Thursday, he expects better results on the scoreboard come the rest of North Eastern Conference play.

“They gave it everything tonight, and I think Carson had probably his best game of the season. He was very, very aggressive. He took pride in trying to win this rivalry game from the get-go,” Joost said. “Jake and Keegan always consistently play their butts off and do the right things, and we did a really good job of getting to the basket and handling that pressure a little bit. They did a really good job of closing on our shooters. We didn’t get a lot of stuff from the outside tonight, so that was a credit to them too. They are very good offensively and they are very good defensively, too. They came to play on both sides, and so did we. I thought we matched their intensity all night, especially those three seniors. In their last M&M game, they have something to be very, very proud of. Obviously they’re all disappointed, but I told them to keep their chins up and I hope they take something out of this and know going into conference play, our results can definitely get a few more Ws as we get some of the teams we have coming up. If we play like that, I know the result will be different.”

Larson was happy with the result. It’s always good to win an M&M Game, after all.

“I give a lot of credit to our kids,” he said. “We made a lot of crucial plays at crucial moments and executed some plays at crucial moments to pull out a victory. Like I told our guys, Marinette’s not going to lay down in a rivalry game, and they came out and played hard. I thought Marinette’s dribble penetration really gave us problems throughout the game, really. We didn’t do a very good job of staying in front of the basketball, but we were able to score efficiently enough to maintain a bit of a lead throughout the game.”

 

Coleman Takes Down Gillett 62-39

The Coleman Cougars were the undeniable victors in their home court match up with the Gillett Tigers Tuesday night, defeating the Tigers 62-39.

The tough night for the Tigers started well into the first half where the Cougars quickly pounced for a 33-11 lead at the first buzzer.

Gillett picked up the slack and increased their scoring pace in the second half, scoring 28 points but still fell far short of what was needed to overcome the Cougars who posted an additional 29 points over the second half.

Coleman’s Noah Nosgovitz was the games top performer for Coleman, getting 18 points while teammate Joe Olsen got nine on the night. Eli Zablocki posted eight.

Gillett was led by Austin Vandecorupt with 10 points and Aydin Franti with eight points. Bradin Bjelland got seven points.

 

STAA Survives WausaukeeBy Four Points

The St. Thomas Aquinas Cavaliers added a win to their season tally by defeating the Wausaukee Rangers Tuesday night 49-45.

It was a close contest from start to finish as the Cavvies controlled the score board at the half with a narrow 21-19 margin. 

STAA continued to hold that slight lead over the second half where they outscored the Rangers 28-26.

Leading all scorers for the game was STAA’s Ethan Braley who shot his way to a 21 point tally. Teammate Teagan Anderson also had a huge hand in the win with this 19 points. Joey Pisani pitched in six points.

Anthony Vanick led the way for the rangers with 11 points. He was followed by teammates Dylan Thoreson and Layne Rowley who both posted eight points each.

 

Crivitz Blasts Niagara In Conference Showdown

The Crivitz Wolverines let loose the cannons Tuesday night on their home court and gave the Niagara Badgers a barrage that left them shellshocked 84-28.

The big Crivitz win saw five scorers hit double digits, Crivitz had the game in hand after the first half saw them hold the definite edge 44- 19.

Another 40 points over the second half overshadowed Niagara’s nine to close the game.

For the Wolverines Sean Christiansen posted 18 points, enough to take top scoring honors for the night. Seth Sellen was also quick hitting at the hoop with his 14 points. Jackson Flowers added on 13 to the total while Tegan Werner pitched in 12. Brady Tadisch was the other double digit scorer with 10 points. Kaden Spalding got in on the action with eight points.

Niagara was led by Weber with 12 points and Swanson with seven.

 

Bulldogs Rally For Nine Point Win Over Gibraltar

The Peshtigo Bulldogs were the victors in a hard fought match with the Gibraltar Vikings Tuesday night in Gibraltar where they examine away with the 73-64 win.

Peshtigo may have won the game but the Vikings were the ones in control at the start, pushing their way to a 43-35 first half lead.

But a tough and scrappy Peshtigo Bulldog squad wasn’t ready to give up as they fired off for 38 points in the second half while clamping down defensively to hold the Vikings to 21 points.

Peshtigo’s Muaz Salem played an impressive game for his Bulldogs, getting 20 points to lead all scorers for the night. Landon Lemke posted 16 points while Christian Boyle added on 12 points. Mason Doberstien chipped in 10 points while Kaine Fort added up seven points.

Gibraltar’s Sammuel Lindenberg posted 16 points while Jake Schar added 13. 

 

Lena Unable to Overcome Elcho in Loss

The Lena Wildcats were shutdown Tuesday night when they took on the visiting Elcho Hornets who handed them a 74-52 loss.

The tough loss saw the Wildcats play a pretty tough first half as they trailed 41-31 after the first half.

Lena was able to cut the Elcho scoring speed down in the second half where they held them to 33 points while scoring 21.

Lena was led by an exemplary performance from Max Beyer who piled on 30 points to lead all scorers. Logan Shallow and Bryce Hosking both posted six points each.

 

Blue Devils Rally Past Chiefs At Kress Holiday Tourney

Oconto defeated Shiocton at the Kress Center’s holiday tournament by a score of 66-62.

Kadin Baxter led Oconto with 22 points, followed by Luke Krueger’s 15, 14 from Carter Koch and nine from Christian Koch.

Shiocton’s Dawson Schmidt scored a team-high 21.

The Blue Devils trailed 28-25 at halftime but out scored the Chiefs in the second half 41-34 to claim the victory.

 

Offense Carries Marines In Big Win Over Panthers

Marinette defeated Oconto Falls 74-50 on Monday behind 48 points from Jake and Sam Sommerfeldt.

Jake scored 31 points on 11-for-20 shooting. He made five of 11 3-pointers in the game. Sam was 6-for-13 for 17 points (3-for-7 3-pointers).

Keegan Polomis was 3-for-9 for six points and Carson Erdman scored seven on a 2-for-4 night. Polomis led the team with nine rebounds. 

Polomis and Erdman each had four assists.

For Oconto Falls, Isaac Raddatz scored 18 points on 6-for-17 shooting. Caden Birr had 11 and Noah Hirst got 10, going 4-for-9 and 4-for-10, respectively. 

Raddatz had a team-high 10 rebounds.

 

Patriots Use Big First Half Lead to Stop Tigers

Goodman/Pembine defeated Gillett 59-44 behind a strong first half on Wednesday.

The Patriots led 37-14 at the break, which gave them some breathing room for Gillett’s 30-22 second half advantage.

Boone Larison tied for the lead amongst all scorers with 16 Patriot points. Jacob Kessel and Ryan Ehlert scored 10 apiece and Owen Wysocki got eight. Andon Kalkofen scored six. Kevin Strietzel had five.

For Gillett, Austin VandeCorput had 16 on 6-for-11 shooting. He also led the team with seven rebounds. Thayne Bjelland had a 5-for-6 shooting night and finished with 14 points. 

Ayden Franti scored seven and tallied a team-high five assists.

 

Bears Bite STAA in Gresham Tournament Action

Wednesday wasn’t Saint Thomas Aquinas Academy’s day in an 89-11 loss to Bonduel.

By halftime, the Bears held a 48-3 lead. They held a 41-8 advantage in the second half.

Four Bonduel players scored in double figures, with Jon Sell and Reece Stoltenow leading the way at 20 and 21 points.

STAA’s leading scorer was Blake DeDamos, who finished with seven points.

The game was played as part of the Gresham Tournament.

 

Cougars Blitz Badgers for Home Conference Win

Coleman defeated Niagara 75-40 on Monday.

Noah Nosgovitz led Coleman’s 11 scorers with 15 points. Eli Zablocki finished with 13 points and Joe Olsen scored nine. 

Liam Zeitler scored eight, Alex Rennie and Hunter Shevy scored six and Logan Kurth scored five.

Niagara’s Tom Martin led all scorers with 19 points. Ed Swanson finished the game with seven points.
