Joel “Joe” Austin Gross

Joel “Joe” Austin Gross, 80, of Pound, passed away at St. Vincent’s Hospital on Wednesday, May 22, 2024, surrounded by his loving family, after fighting a short battle from a stroke.

Joe was born October 15, 1943, to Walter and Charlotte (Squires) Gross. He attended grade school in Pound and then High School in Crivitz WI. Joe attended and was baptized at Pioneer Baptist Church in his youth.

He started his career as a guide for Horse Trail riding at Elmer Grosse’s Trout Ranch in Pound. Joe then met the love of his life, Betty Cudnohufsky, at a Church youth group meeting at Section Eight Church in Pound. They married at Section Eight Baptist Church on February 27, 1965, on Betty’s parents’ wedding anniversary.

After getting married, Joe and Betty moved to Milwaukee where they worked for 4 years at the same company (she in the office and he in the factory). His love of country life soon brought them back to Pound where they took over Betty’s parents’ home dairy farm and raised two children while also working outside the home at Graetz Manufacturing.

Joe was a fun loving guy who had the gift of gab and who could turn a 10 minute story into a two hour long visit. He enjoyed watching the Packers, hunting, ATV riding and several trips out west to hunt and go site seeing. After retiring from farming his own farm, he enjoyed working at Nicolet Farms for 20 years.

He was a member of the board at Equity Livestock Sales. Joe always enjoyed his grandchildren and during many sleep overs on the family farm he loved taking them on many 4-wheeler rides and sledding in the fields.

Joe will be greatly missed by his wife of 59 years: Betty; Daughter: Christine (Dennis) Hendricks and son: Mark (Kate) Gross; two grandchildren:Adam and Leo Gross; Siblings: Jeanne Matykowski, Jerry Gross, Gordon (Cindy) Gross; Twins: Leroy (Sue) Gross and Wanda (Greg) Grabowski. Joe is further survived by many nieces, nephews and special friends, Jon Carlson and Steve Portfilio.

Along with his parents and mother and father-in-law, he was preceded in death by his brother-in-law: Bruce Matykowski; sister-in-law: Kathleen Gross and Niece: Amy Marlatt.

Family will greet relatives and friends on Friday, June 14, 2024, at Rhodes Charapata Funeral Home, 235 E. Main St. Coleman, WI., 54112. Visitation will begin at 12:00 PM until 3:00 PM. Funeral Service will follow at the funeral home beginning at 3:00 PM with Pastor David Navis to officiate. Online condolences may be expressed at www.rhodescharapata.com

The family would like to send a special thanks to 6th and 9th floor staff at St. Vincent Hospital and Unity Hospice for their tender loving care.
