Fire Destroys Nowak Family Barn and Contents Sunday

Pound Fire Chief Turner Gross reported that on Sunday evening Dec. 19 the Pound and Brazeau Fire Departments were paged out for a barn fire at 7:55 p.m to W8966 West 26th road in the Township of Pound to the Edward and Julie Nowak farm.

  Chief Gross stated the orange glow in the sky from the fire could be seen for almost 15 miles so he immediately upgraded the MABAS working still to a box alarm which brought in assistance from the Grover-Porterfield, Town of Lake, Crivitz, Coleman and Town of Stephenson Fire Departments. As the fire progressed Chief Gross called for a second alarm with Middle Inlet and Wausaukee Fire Departments responding. 

  Upon arrival firefighters found the barn fully engulfed in flames. Before firefighters arrived, Julie Nowak was able to get most of the dairy cows out of the barn but five cows perished in the blaze. A total of 60 firefighters battled the fire at one time or another. Chief Gross said there were 11 water tenders, four engine companies, two ladder trucks all working to extinguish the flames. Three fill sites were used to keep water flowing for firefighters who pumped roughly 297,000 gallons of water on the fire. 

  According to Gross, firefighters remained on scene till approximately 1:45 a.m. Monday morning. The barn and contents were a total loss but the dairy portion was able to saved. Damage estimates are over $300,000. Cause of the fire is under investigation by the Pound Fire Department.

Gross thanked the Grover-Porterfield, Town Of Lake, Crivitz, Coleman, Stephenson, Middle Inlet and Wausaukee Fire Departments along with Crivitz and Coleman Rescue for assisting at the scene. Dan Risner Excavating was called to bring  heavy machinery for overhaul. The only injury reported was to Julie Nowak, who was transported to Aurora Bay Area Hospital in Marinette. The extent of her injuries is not known. 

Flames were visible for miles as fire raged in a barn at the Edward and Julie Nowak farm on West 26th Road in Pound. Over 60 firefighters helped to get the blaze under control, unfortunately the barn was a total loss according to Pound Fire Chief Turner Gross.
