Elwood R. Bengry

Elwood R. Bengry, 72, of Oconto, passed away Monday, Nov. 8, 2021 at an area hospital, after a long illness. 

Born Nov. 23, 1948 in Marquette, Mi., he graduated from Marquette High School and then served in the United States Army. While in Vietnam, he earned the Bronze Star for heroism under fire and also earned a Purple Heart. He continued to serve in the Army National Guard, earning the rank of Sergeant First Class. 

After service, he married Shelba Jean Medley, later returning to Marquette and she preceded him in death in 1991. He later married Jeanette Maki and she preceded him in death in 2017. 

He worked as a mechanic most of his career at K.I. Sawyer AFB in Michigan until retiring in 1995 after  the base closed. A member of Oconto Gospel Chapel, he also belonged to Oconto American Legion Post # 74. 

He enjoyed sailing, hunting, fishing, motorcycle rides, woodworking and traveling. 

Survivors include two daughters, Medea (Jerry Cennamo) Bengry, Arizona and Charla Oakley Sanders, Kentucky; six grandchildren;  two step-children, Rachel (Joe) Chadwick and Christopher (Alison) Chadwick; five siblings, Delores, April, Carlton, Diane and Ramona; his “Angel caregiver”, Jeanne Neta and many nieces; nephews; other relatives and friends. 

Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by both his first wife, Shelba Jean and second wife, Jeanette. 

Services were held at Oconto Gospel Chapel in Oconto, on Thursday, Nov. 11 with Rev. Peter Dorn officiating. Burial was  in Northland Chapel Gardens in Negaunee, Mi. Rhodes Charapata Funeral Home of Oconto assisted the family. Online condolences can be made at www.rhodescharapata.com.
