David White - Letter to Editor

Dear Editor
My good friend and former brother-in-law, Dale Fick, passed away on Jan. 8, 2023. He gave me this poem about 40 years ago. This fits Dale and the man he was to a tee. One hell of a man.
David White

“Good Timber”
The tree that never had to fight
For sun and sky and air and light;
That stood out in the open plain
And always got its share of rain
Never became a forest King,
But lived and died a scrubby thing.

The man who never had to toil
By hand or mind mid life’s turmoil;
Who never had to win his share
Of sun and sky and light and air
Never became a manly man
But lived and died as he began.

Good timber does not grow in ease,--
The stronger wind, the tougher trees,
The farther skies, the greater length,
The rougher storms, the greater strength,
By sun and cold, by rain and snows,
In tree or man good timber grows.

“Love Is”
Love is serving God,
In your own special way.
Doing deeds of kindness,
To brighten someone’s day.
It tells them that God loves them,
And that you love them too.
Giving them strength and courage,
To face the things they’re going through.
It isn’t always something large,
That means the most to others.
It’s a smile, a hug, a helping hand,
It’s being an extra sister or brother.
So call a lonely someone.....
Send a small gift or loving card.
Do a little something.....
That for them may be too hard.
You’ll find that love is something
That’s more precious, each day you live,
For you get back more blessings,
Than you could ever give.
Joyce Bedora,
Krakow
