David Johnson – Letter to Editor

Dear Editor:

HEROS

My heros don’t wear capes, tights, or outlandish costumes. They don’t have superhuman powers or fight villains that are mere parodies of evil. My heros are not found within the pages of Marvel comics or the movies. They dwell in the real world where the rest of us live. So are the villains that they fight.

There are the military personnel who keep despots and terrorists from destroying our way of life. They are the doctors, scientists and other medical specialists who fight pain, suffering, disease and even death to keep us healthy. They are the law enforcement people who fight to put very real villains in jail and off the streets. There are educators who fight ignorance and social workers who fight poverty and intolerance. they are the judges and legislators who fight anarchy by making and enforcing the rules of an orderly society. They are the clergy who teach morality and fight to save our souls by reminding us there is a power greater than all mankind.

They are our friends and neighbors who by their friendly hello, smile or by their compassion, generosity, charity and human kindness make the world a better place. In spite of all the misery and evil we see every day in the news these heros show us that there is a lot more good in the world than evil. Each of us has the capacity to be a hero by merely doing the right thing when the opportunity presents itself.
