Coleman Edges Lena in M&O Opener

Coleman began its M&O Conference defense with a narrow victory over Lena on Tuesday, 50-44.
The Wildcats started strong, taking a 9-2 lead in the opening 10 minutes. Coleman clawed back to tie the game at 15 on a pair of free throws by Aubrey Bintz, but Lena led 17-16 at halftime.
“We weren’t really surprised with Lena. We knew they were going to be a good basketball team, that is for sure,” Coleman coach Todd Olsen said. “They have a ton of height and a lot of
athletes, so we knew if we weren’t playing good basketball, they were going to get a lead on us. They out-hustled us at the start, that’s for sure.”
Bintz scored four straight to give Coleman a 22-20 lead early in the second half. Callee Compe made a free throw to extend the lead to 25-20, but Lena hung around, keeping the lead to four points or less until Coleman created some space with less than five minutes to go.
Kiersten Jensen scored to make it 39-33 and Bintz made two free throws to give Coleman a 41- 33 lead.
Bintz scored 19 points for Coleman. She made 13 of her 16 free throws in the game.
“That’s the one thing we’ve got going for us on our shooting is our free throws have been good. Otherwise our shooting has not been great, but our free throws have saved us quite a bit,”
Coleman coach Todd Olsen said.
Cameron Zeitler and Kiersten Jensen scored six points apiece. Callee Compe and Madelyn Hinther each scored five.
“Our offense was impatient. It’s something that we are going to continue to work on. We’ve been changing a lot of things this year and we’ve been focusing on the defensive side of the ball,”
Olsen said. “Now we’ve got to focus on the offensive side. The shots will fall. We’re too good of a shooting team for them to not start going in. We’ll continue to work on it and get better every
day.”
For Lena, McNurlen led the way with 19 points. Eva Brooks had 11 points and 17 rebounds, and Whitney Potter scored 10 points.
The Cougars ran mostly zone to try and combat their size disadvantage, and it worked just as
planned.
“We are not a tall team, so we have to switch to a zone when we play taller teams,” Olsen said.
“The girls have been working on a zone for a week, and the girls ran it to perfection.”
Lena coach Tim Goldschmidt was happy with his team’s work on defense. Once they start to make some more shots, especially from the free throw line where they went 10-20, they’ll be able to compete with the strength of the M&O Conference, he said.
Coleman (2-1 overall, 1-0 M&O) faces M&O challengers Niagara on the road Friday at 7:15 p.m.
Lena (1-1 overall, 0-1 M&O) hosts Crivitz on Friday at 7:15 p.m.
