Labor Day has come and gone, which means Summer in TIMESland is over. The kids are back in school. A few leaves are turning color. Despite some intermittent rains, we enjoyed a pretty glorious Labor Day weekend, and then, right on schedule, to prove it’s Autumn, a storm thundered through on Sunday night and by Monday morning chilly but sunny autumn style weather had settled in.

Many of you probably heard, as I did, that our first president, George Washington, had false teeth made of wood.  “Fake news,” according to the Mount Vernon Estate and Garden, which cares for the president’s former residence and history.  I was momentarily relieved, because I was wondering how in the world anyone could eat with wooden false teeth – or even how the teeth would have been kept in his mouth.

These first few days of fall have certainly been gifts -  God’s way of reminding us just how wonderful He is. The very air sparkles. A few leaves are just starting to turn, showing promise of greater glories yet to come. A breath of wind sets the Quaking Aspen leaves to fluttering like lashes around so many shining eyes flirting with the sun.
Gardens, fields and orchards groan with the bounty of the season or rest after yielding their harvest. Once Fall really gets here, every shade of color glows with heightened brilliance. We still have that to look forward to.

How quickly pass the seasons of our lives! Seems like only yesterday we were waiting for Summer to get here, and now it’s almost gone. Apples hang ripe on the trees, and blackberries abound. A few leaves are already starting to turn. Next  week  - starting on Thursday, Aug. 26 and running through Sunday,  Aug. 29 - is the Marinette County Fair.
Classes resume soon at most TIMESland schools. Then comes Labor Day and it’s all over for another year.

Now that the cucumber tsunami has started my mind is on pickles.  I don’t can, but I do make freezer sweet pickles (I have a sister in law who loves those,) and a refrigerator dill that doesn’t keep long.  That is okay, because Mike and I tear through them fast, as we like them so much.
